‘Some Kind of Blue’ – Noir

Reading Time: 2 minutes
Noir is a five member Sydney based band led by vocalist Jessica Mincher and guitarist Billy James. ‘Some Kind of Blues’, their first and only album, was released in 2017.
The band classifies their music as ‘reverb heavy blues’. I would suggest that a fusion of Indie, bluesy-pop, and rock with a western guitar description might be more representative of this album.
Similarly, Noir’s publicity states that they are influenced by diverse artists including: Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Air, Jeff Buckley, Neil Young, and Ry Cooder. However, their sound on this album is much more reminiscent of Blondie or Cowboy Junkies.
But that brings me back to the album, which to me, epitomises cool blue pop. It is an album of catchy melodies which feature Billy’s distinctive guitar sound, and Jessica’s clear voice. But what makes it particularly attractive is the sense of cool that generates. It is pure simple escapist music that will make you feel better about yourself and whatever it is that you’re doing at the time.
On the other hand, if you’re looking for reverb heavy blues, this album is not for you.
