Lou Doillon, ‘Places’

Reading Time: < 1 minute
Unmistakeable, French born, Lou Doillon is clearly multi-talented. At 35 years of age she can look back on successful careers as a fashion model, actor, artist and multi-instrumentalist, composer and singer.

Her 2013 English-language album, ‘Places’ presented her significant songwriting talent and unforgettable voice to the world. The hypnotic tunes on this album contain personal storytelling yet avoids cliches. Lou’s voice is particularly expressive, and though it has been likened to Nina Simone and Marianne Faithfull, it retains a raw originality. The album has been classified as ‘Alternative’. It may be fairer to say that Lou’s songs are melodious, contemporary, largely ballads, structured around Lou’s voice and lyrics and richly accompanied.

While the 11 tracks disclose a style that is Lou’s, they also display a range of styles and on one or two tracks, genres. The rich musical backing is outstanding, varying significantly across the album.

While Lou’s follow up 2015 ‘Lay Low’ album, contains some excellent songs, in my opinion, it fails to match the consistency and overall brilliance of ‘Places’, providing one more reason for continuing to play ‘Places’ over and over.
