Doc Neeson’s Angels – Acoustic Sessions
‘The Angels’ remind many of us of the carefree excesses of uni life. Reflecting on pogoing to ‘Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again’ certainly makes me light up with a smile.
However, as we age and are expected to be upstanding members of society, it becomes harder and harder to listen to The Angels at appropriate sound volume. I’ve discovered that a little-known 2007 album may help. I refer to the Doc Neeson’s Angels – Acoustic Sessions album, released as part of the ‘Greatest Hits Acoustic’ series.
On this album, the late and great Doc Neeson’s voice is gravelly and expressive. In acoustic mode, he is clearly not competing with the wall of sound that we came to expect from the band.
Unlike many other acoustic version albums, the versions of the band’s hits to be found on this album are so much more than quieter versions of the originals. This album presents the Angel’s most loved songs in a style that takes us away from the frenzy of the original loud sound and beat, to a softer but equally rhythmic version of the songs sung by the Doc.

While I would never have imagined preferring acoustic versions of ‘Be With You,’ or ‘Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again,’ I must confess that I’ve grown extremely fond of them, and think of them as presented as if in a very intimate concert venue.
