The Bodyguard, Series 1.

Reading Time: 2 minutes
The Bodyguard (Series 1) is a highly addictive British political/security drama/thriller television series. The fine and experienced actors are perfectly cast as the politicians, members of the security service or police force, assorted other baddies and family members.

The main character is Sgt. David Budd, a former British soldier who had returned from active service in Afghanistan suffering PTSD.  This legacy of the war we learn has caused a breakdown in his marriage and separation from his two young children.  A heroic action while off duty from his work in the Specialist Protection Branch of the Metropolitan Police leads him to be assigned to take on the principal responsibility for the protection of Julia Montague, the high profile, outspoken and highly ambitious Home Secretary. The personal and professional dilemmas that he confronts in this work lie at the core of this series. The other key themes of this series concern contemporary political maneuvering, ambition and corruption in public life, as well as counter-terrorism and democratic freedoms.

This is an intelligent adult thriller with sufficient twists and turns to keep the viewer guessing until the very end. It is a drama series which does not ease up on the realistically portrayed action. The ever-present sense of fear, suspense and apprehension appears to reflect the work of an ever vigilant bodyguard. The vest-bomb disarming scenes are particularly tense.

If you enjoy a believable contemporary action drama that does not rely on stereotypes, cliches or special effects then this first series of The Bodyguard is likely to reward you with six hours of thoroughly enjoyable if not overly relaxing viewing.
