Khashoggi brings out the worst in Trump

The latest installment of the investigation into the death/murder of Jamal Khashoggi demonstrates why we shouldn’t simply dismiss Donald Trump as a comical fool. In declaring support for the Saudi government and choosing to dismiss reports by US security organisations suggesting that in all probability Khashoggi was tortured, killed and dismembered with the knowledge, if not the command, of the Saudi royal family, Trump exhibits a level of callous inhumanity and immorality that is beyond belief.
No leader of a democratic country that purports to respect human rights and rule of law should ever proudly announce that he will side with an authoritarian regime that brutally kills outspoken critical journalists, merely because that country is a strategic partner, has ordered billions worth of armaments (to use on neighbouring countries) or may retaliate causing the price of petrol to rise.
Whatever happened to championing to Democracy and individual rights when dealing with countries like Saudi Arabia that still openly deny women the most fundamental of rights and do not tolerate any form of dissent.
Donald Trump has exhibited what we would describe as the worst of ‘profit at all costs’ business. Americans and nations that value morality, human rights, or a sense of right and wrong above wealth (or the price of petrol) need to say ‘your values are unacceptable and will not be permitted to further erode what the USA once stood for, or the stability of the international order’.
