‘The Little Death’

Reading Time: < 1 minute
‘The Little Death’ is a 2014 Australian film now freely available from SBS on demand.

It is a very funny adult comedy about sex, and mostly about sexual fantasies not known or attractive to both parties in a relationship. The film presents several parallel stories only nominally linked until the last few minutes. A recurring memorable scene that provides a token link between the individual stories is that of Kym Gyngell, as the new neighbour, introducing himself and fulfilling his legal obligation to the neighbourhood.

The excellent acting, slick production and notably original and clever storylines, make this film, clever light entertainment. In view of the subject matter, the film’s MA15+ rating is not surprising. What is a welcome surprise is that the sexual content is not gratuitous or juvenile, and that sex is not presented as a cure for all relationship issues. Amongst all the comedy (which thankfully avoids the cringe-worthy amateurish sketches of so many other Australian films) are some poignant moments of sadness. These have grown in significance for me, enriching my appreciation of this film, well beyond its description as an adult comedy

If melancholic and confronting adult cinema is not your cup of tea, and if you associate SBS offerings with this genre, be assured that ‘Little Death’ is fun and entertainment, with just enough thought provoking reality thrown in to make us feel that we got more than just a few laughs from watching it.
