Emma Louise, ‘Lilac Everything’

Reading Time: < 1 minute
On her just released third studio album, ‘Lilac Everything’, Emma Louise’s voice does not have the clear, sweet high sound that we have come to associate with her singing. According to iTunes, after experimenting with having her vocals pitched down, Emma decided to release an album with her vocals on every song altered in that way – a voice that she has dubbed ‘Joseph’.

‘Joseph’ has a masculine, Julio Iglesias like, slightly raspy voice, perfectly suited to the beautiful and emotional tunes and instrumentation. This album’s collection of songs showcases the range of Emma’s vocals and her versatility in tackling a variety of musical styles.

The album’s fifth song ‘Gentleman’ is the only up tempo song on the album, and its Caribbean rhythm seems out of step with the rest of the album. The seventh track, ‘Solitude’ is also different in that it is the only instrumental track on the album. While the trumpet solos are certainly captivating, so far I have failed to discover Emma’s contribution to this track.

An album of contemporary soft melodic music. It’s quality is up there with Emma’s previous albums. As for the altered vocals – I like Joseph, but miss Emma.
