Update on Cardinal Pell’s Pending Trial

Reading Time: < 1 minute
In a directions hearing this morning, Victorian County Court Judge Sue Pullen and the parties agreed that the charges on which Cardinal Pell was committed to stand trial be split and addressed in two separate trials – a 3 to 5 week trial addressing charges related to a Ballarat swimming pool in in the 1970s, and the other a trial of at least 5 weeks duration concerning events two decades later in Melbourne’s St.Patrick’s Cathedral. Judge Pullen also directed that complainants will be permitted to   give evidence via video link rather than in person.

Citing the advanced age of his 76 year old client and of at least one of the complainants, Robert Richter QC requested that the holding of the trials be expedited.

Hearing dates are likely to be set at the next directions hearing in two weeks on 16 May 2018.
