‘Three Billboards…’

The only criticism that I have read of ‘Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri’ is that audiences have not liked the ending. Well I beg to differ and suggest that the ending was possibly the only option for a convincing rather than a hollywood (heroes lived happily ever after and or the baddie died a gruesome death) finale.
This is a quality movie, based on an excellent script and realistic standout acting performances. Particularly noteworthy is the Globe Award winning performance by Frances McDormand (Fargo), who plays the grieving and angry mother seeking justice and revenge for the rape and murder of her daughter. Almost as impressive is the performance by Woody Harrelson (Cheers) who as the police officer in charge is the target of the Bill Boards’ messages. A further noteworthy performance is that by Sam Rockwell, as a seemingly not so bright and violent police officer.
The storyline is quirky, funny, sad, thought provoking, and completely unpredictable. The themes we discussed after the movie were how forgiveness by some of the characters had affected the desire for revenge and punishment by others, and how first impressions of people were shown to be so wrong. It is a film that deserves the high praise it has received universally.
